12/14 - On the Move!

Friends

As we step deeper into the Advent season, I’ve been sitting with this week’s Scripture from Luke 2:8–18. It’s easy to forget that the first people to hear the good news of Christ’s birth were not priests or scholars or well-prepared worship leaders. They were shepherds—ordinary workers just trying to stay awake in the cold night air. Nothing about their evening suggested divine interruption. And yet God chose them. God broke into their routine with glory, with song, and with a call: Go. Move. See for yourselves.

And the shepherds went. They didn’t analyze it, overthink it, or look for a better time. They simply responded. Something about that has been speaking to me this week. Music itself is movement. Breath becomes motion. Sound becomes journey. Harmony becomes invitation. And every time we gather—choir, congregation, musicians, pastors—we step once again into that holy movement toward the presence of God.

Our music on Sunday reflects that journey. We begin with Angels We Have Heard on High, a reminder that heaven still sings over the world whether we are ready or not. From there we settle into It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, with Breathe woven between the verses, creating a space to slow down, inhale deeply, and make room for peace. By the time we reach the sermon, On the Move for God: Embracing the Call to Follow, we’ve already stepped into the story—listening for our own invitation. And finally, we are sent out with Go, Tell It on the Mountain, echoing the shepherds who couldn’t help but share what they had seen and heard.

One of the beautiful things about music ministry is that it reminds us that movement doesn’t always mean dramatic life changes. Sometimes the movement God calls us to is internal—a softened heart, a deeper breath, a steady resolve to keep going. Sometimes it’s an act of kindness, a courageous yes, or a moment of quiet trust. Wherever God is nudging you this week, I hope you feel encouraged to take even one small step.

May our worship, our singing, and our very lives continue to carry the good news with the same joy and urgency as those shepherds on the hillside. And may we stay open to the ways God is still breaking in—through music, through Scripture, and yes, even through the unexpected moments of our everyday routines.

Until next week, keep singing, keep breathing, and keep moving toward the light.
